5 Signs Your Dog's Harness Doesn't Fit Right

Most owners assume their dog's harness fits fine simply because it goes on and off without a struggle. But a harness can look fine on the surface and still be causing discomfort underneath. Here are five signs worth checking for.

1. Fur Rubbing or Flattening
Take a look at the fur around the chest and under the front legs after a walk. If it's flattened, patchy, or thinning in specific spots, that's usually a sign the harness is sitting too tight or rubbing in one particular area.

2. Your Dog Hesitates When It Goes On
Dogs that pull away, freeze, or seem reluctant when the harness comes out are often reacting to past discomfort. A well-fitted harness shouldn't cause any hesitation once your dog is used to wearing it.

3. Restricted or Awkward Movement
Watch your dog's front legs as they walk. If their stride looks shortened, stiff, or slightly off compared to normal, the harness may be sitting too far forward or too tight across the shoulders.

4. It Twists or Shifts During the Walk
A properly fitted harness stays in place. If yours keeps rotating, sliding to one side, or riding up towards the neck, it's either too loose or not shaped correctly for your dog's build.

5. Red Marks or Sore Patches
Check the skin, not just the fur, after longer walks. Redness, indentation marks, or tenderness around the chest and neck are clear signs the fit needs adjusting straight away.

If any of these sound familiar, it's worth rechecking the sizing and adjusting the straps before the next walk. A few small tweaks can turn an uncomfortable harness into one your dog barely notices they're wearing.
